Why You Should Avoid Drinking Lemon Water From A Copper Glass

Lemon Water In Cooper vessels

🧪 Experts Warn Against Mixing Lemon Water with Copper Vessels

New Delhi, July 17, 2025 — While copper vessels have long been revered in Ayurvedic tradition for their detoxifying properties, health experts are now cautioning against a rising trend: drinking lemon water from copper glasses. What may seem like a wellness hack could actually pose serious health risks.

⚠️ The Science Behind the Warning

Lemon juice contains citric acid, which reacts aggressively with copper. This chemical interaction leads to the formation of copper salts such as copper citrate, which dissolve into the water. According to the American Chemical Society, these reactions can result in copper leaching, altering both the taste and safety of the drink.

🩺 Health Risks of Copper Toxicity

Studies show that excessive copper intake can cause:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Stomach cramps
  • Liver and kidney damage
  • Neurological symptoms like dizziness and fatigue

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends limiting copper levels in drinking water to 2 mg/litre. However, when acidic substances like lemon juice are stored in copper vessels, the leaching rate increases dramatically.

🧘‍♀️ Ayurvedic Perspective

Ayurveda supports drinking tamra jal—plain water stored overnight in copper vessels—to balance doshas and aid digestion. But it strictly prohibits storing acidic substances like lemon juice, tamarind, or vinegar in copper, as they disrupt the body’s internal balance and may lead to the formation of ama (toxins).

🧼 Lemon: Great for Cleaning, Not for Drinking

Ironically, lemon juice is often used to clean copper vessels due to its ability to dissolve oxidation stains. But experts emphasize that this same acid, when consumed after reacting with copper, can be harmful.

✅ Safer Alternatives

To enjoy lemon water safely, use:

  • Glass
  • Stainless steel
  • Ceramic or earthenware

These materials are non-reactive and preserve the nutritional integrity of your drink.
